How dumb is Lisa Ling, anyway?

Last night on the Golden Globes pre-show (which is a show in itself) I witnessed this exhange: Ling asked Johnny Depp if there were any roles he dreamed of playing. Depp replied, "Mae West." When Ling failed to acknowledge his joke, (it was a joke, right? I mean the guy does live in France ... ) instead holidng the mic in his face and waiting for him to continue, continue he did, but saying something like, "I think I may be too old for that now, though. So maybe, um, Carol Channing?" Still no comment or even a titter from Ling, so Depp packed it in and walked away. Is that a bit weird?
